This website aims to recapture human beings through the act of eating with hands, based on an archive of cultures around the world, adding an academic perspective.
Eating with hands in humankind has existed as a basis of human life, changing form in relation to development, cognition, religion, culture/customs, and welfare of the society.
However, the history of eating with hands has always been associated with a reputation for barbarism and filth, and these values have influenced the decline of eating with hands cultures. Even in countries where eating with hands is deeply rooted, the population of those who eat with their hands is decreasing due to the spread of modernization, the influence of colonial rule, and the admiration towards other cultures.
While acknowledging such history and trends, we do not regard eating with hands as a mere measure of eating, but rather as a behavior that expands the mind and body, positively regarding it as one form of human performance.
In the “World’s Cultures” category, we will post articles on eating with hands cultures around the world, adding an academic perspective. In addition, we will post poems, essays, interviews, artistic expressions, and interdisciplinary collaboration with people from various fields.
The logo was made by breaking down the kanji (Chinese character) for “te shoku”. The hand symbolizes the many meals eaten with hands throughout human history, with hope that eating with hands will be carried on in the future. The sense of unity is conveyed through the physical sensation of the hands and the way in which food and culture are melded within the hands.
